Belisario Verdicchio di Matelica Cambrugiano

One of the joys of the internet is that it offers us the opportunity to talk more about wine producers who may otherwise have never gotten the recognition they deserve. Even today there are so many Italian producers who have been making amazing wines for many years that have yet to crack the international markets that are always so keen to hear more about the latest and greatest wines to come out of the country.

Shining a spotlight on such producers is one of the main reasons why the team at Xtrawine does what it does and we hope that our work has helped at least a few of you find winemakers who produce vintages that suit your tastes.

That’s also exactly what we aim to do with Belisario. Yes, it may not be a producer that is on everybody’s lips right now, but we truly think they are an excellent contributor to the Italian wine industry. Here we will focus on the story behind the company and one of the many excellent wines that they produce.

The History

Founded in 1971, Belisario has been producing amazing wines for many years, but has struggled to garner the recognition that many of its contemporaries have, especially overseas. The company, which should not be confused with the opera of the same name, owns a farm that spans a rather startling 300 hectares, which makes them capable of producing great quantities of wine.

Don’t for a second allow yourself to think that this means they are a quantity over quality producer though. The company is in fact the largest producer of the Verdicchio di Matelica DOC, which in itself has allowed them to develop an exceptional reputation in Italy, even if the rest of the world is still playing a little bit of catch-up.

Having said that, you may have enjoyed a Belisario without even realising it. While the wines that carry that label tend to be sold to restaurants and enthusiasts, the company also produces the Poggio to Rondini variety that is often seen in larger retailers. Who knows, you may well have picked up a bottle for yourself while out shopping and not even realised that this is the company that actually produces it.

All of the company’s vineyards are located on the Upper Esina Valley, which means they are ideally located to make the most out of the land while also getting everything they need from the weather.

In fact, the company goes as far as to state that the Alta Valle Esina is what sets them apart from other producers, allowing their wines to enjoy unique features that live long in the memories of those who experience them.

The grapes experience the full benefits of the continental climate that can only be delivered by the Mediterranean sea, particularly during the summer months when the sunshine helps the grapes really grow to their full potential. In some cases, the company even says that the grapes they grow ripen to extremes because of the microclimate they experience, which allows for even more interesting flavours.

In all, the company believes that it is this climate, alongside the hard work that they put into their grapes, that allows their wines to stand out as a style, rather than a fad. The wines they produce are both their pride and their greatest responsibility, which is why the company dedicates so much time and work both to the production of the grapes and everything that goes into the winemaking process.

It is this that has allowed them to develop the stellar reputation they enjoy throughout Italy, but their endeavours stretch far beyond those of many comparably-sized producers.

In 1990, the company decided to take a different approach to many other producers by opening the Belisario Wine shops. These chain of shops have become a go-to place for Italians who want to not only discover the wines that the company has been producing for so many decades, but also explore a number of other great wines from all over the world.

All told, the chain plays host to 500 labels from all over Italy and the world, with the company having placed a great deal of time and effort into choosing wines that they believe visitors will love to experience.

Each shop is essentially a wine bar where customers can speak to talented professionals who can guide them towards great wines that suit their tastes and price ranges. In recent years, the store has even started to slowly specialize in finding rarer brands to offer them more exposure.

It is that exposure that we believe Belisario deserves in the rest of the world, not least because of the company’s continued dedication to other wine producers. With all of that being said, let’s take a look at one of the best wines to be produced by the company in some time.

Belisario Verdicchio di Matelica Cambrugiano Riserva 2014

The name may be a little bit of a mouthful, but the Belisario Verdicchio di Matelica Cambrugiano Riserva 2014 really is one of the finest white wines to come from the Verdicchio di Matelica appellation. For an added bonus, the wine is also completely organic, which just goes to show how much respect the company has for its land.

The wine immediately captures the attention with its clear, straw yellow colouring that shows that it has been aged to peak maturity. Those who take the time to give it a slightly closer look will often find their own reflections staring back at them, which is a wonderful touch that makes the wine all the more enchanting.

To the nose, the wine has extremely intense aromas of ripe fruits, citrus and tropical notes, all of which combine to create a bouquet that is immensely refreshing. The slight hint of a mineral background is just a teaser for the unique qualities the wine possesses as a result of the care that has gone into its production.

To the taste, the wine stands out because of its softness and interesting texture. There is a perfect balance of flavours, with the mineral notes really providing a foundation for the rest of the wine. It finishes with a fruity flourish that leaves you wanting more.
