Here at Xtrawine we like to place special focus on various winemakers in an effort to educate our customers a little more as to the history of the drinks that love consuming and the way that Italian winemaking has influenced the culture of the country. Simply put, without wine, there would be no Italy.
One of the most prestigious winemakers in all of the land is the Antinori family. They have been in the business since the mid-14th century and have maintained a reputation ever since those days as one of the greatest winemakers the world has ever known.
Though steeped in tradition, the Antinori family has always had an eye to the future as well. They were one of the major players in the Super Tuscan movement of the 1970s and they complement their great and more prestigious wines with a range of newer vintages that aim to demonstrate just how much their more modern winemaking techniques bring to the table.
The Super Tuscan movement isn’t the only recent innovation that they have been a part of though. The company is always looking for brand new ways to appeal to its customers and with that in mind that they began the Tormaresca winery in 1998.
The Antinori family history has been covered on the website before and is a rich and illustrious history that most certainly bears reading about. However, in this case we will be placing more of a focus on the Tormaresca winery and its brief, though also interesting, history.
The Tormaresca winery came about as the Antinori recognised the rich history of viticulture in the Puglia region, noting that the region has been a source of quality and innovation for many years. Ever since the days of the ancient Greeks, grapes have been cultivated in the region to create wines, which also accounts for some of the very Greek-sounding names of many of the grapes that are native to the region.
This tradition continues on to the present day, thanks to the continued use of Negroamaro, Aglianico and Primitivo, which are all grapes that have a strong connection with the area and have been used to make great wines for many years. Couple this with the Antinori family’s penchant for innovation and you have a potent combination of tradition and technique that was almost guaranteed to create something wonderful.
And so it was that the family set up the Tormaresca winery in 1998 to realise their ambitions of creating a wine that the Puglia region could be proud of. By combining the qualities of the native grape varieties with a number of other grapes, such as Chardonnay and Cabernet, that have been imported into the region, the winemakers set about its task of creating a high quality wine that embodies everything that makes the region so wonderful, while also have a creative and innovative side that gives the wines that they produce a character all of their own. BY combining non-native and native grape varieties the Tormaresca winery is able to create wines that have their own characteristics, expressing themselves in the terroir in a way that no other wines from the region are able.
The grape varieties that are native to the Puglia region have quality, character and soul that is hard to find anywhere else. This is the main thing that attracted the Antinori family to the area and gave them the ideas that they had for using said grape to create wines quite unlike any that had been experienced beforehand.
That led to increased investment into the area, as the family believed that they could create high quality wines that would give Puglia the reputation that it deserves amongst the great winemaking territories of the country.
The estate itself is now comprised of two properties, which combine to offer the family around 600 hectares of land from which to develop their wines. Firstly, they maintain a small vineyard at Minervino Murge, near Bari, which is located near the coast of the Adriatic Sea in the Castel del Monte DOC region. The second is a much larger estate that is near San Pietro Vernotico, which is closer to the Salento DOC region. The combination of the two is potent indeed.
The company combines these estates with corporate offices located in the city of Bari, allowing the entire winery to have all of the advantages of the many years of experience of the Antinori family when it comes to business, as well as the values and qualities that are intrinsic with the types of wine that come from the region.
While many of the wines created by the Tormaresca estate combine the old with the innovative, in the Antinori Tormaresca Kaloro Moscato di Trani 2009 we have a wine that solely uses a grape that is native to the region, simply to highlight the many qualities that it possesses.
Made completely using Moscato Giallo, the wine is a sweet white that stands in stark contrast to the Chianti variations that the Antinori family are better known for producing. That doesn’t mean that it doesn’t have many of its own qualities that are worth exploring and this particular vintage has received a number of very positive reviews from a range of different sources, all of which comment on the quality of the wine and its unique character.
Best of all, the wine is also on the less expensive side of the scale, which means that it is easily accessible for those who want to try something a little bit different but don’t have a huge budget to play around with. It is best enjoyed as a refreshing wine that can be sipped after a hard day at work and it goes particularly well with a range of desserts, as the fruity sweetness of the wine often complements slightly richer foods quite well.
Regardless of how you choose to drink it, the Antinori Tormaresca Kaloro Moscato di Trani 2009 is a wine of immense quality and is the perfect showcase for what the Antinori family are attempting to achieve with the Tormaresca winery.
