The Zoccolaio Tree

The tree on the Lo Zoccolaio label is a large white poplar, grown with a double trunk. In fact, in old farmsteads, they used to plant a tree in the center of the courtyard to provide shade on long, sunny summer days.

Zoccolaio tree

The tree is represented as in the Jewish and Indian iconography of the inverted tree: rooted in the sky (the spiritual dimension) and extending its branched on the ground, that is the known world. It is the tree of life or the tree of knowledge. The graphic of the labels traces back to this tradition that characterizes Lo Zoccolaio identity

Zoccolaio and Barolo: Excellence from Piedmont

Barolo: UNESCO World Heritage Territory

Barolo, the golden land of Piedmontese winemaking, is immersed in the vineyard landscape. Rolling hills as far as the eye can see, shaped over centuries by the hands of those who have drawn sustenance and culture from those rows. A true masterpiece, akin to a painting. In 2014, Barolo earned recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, celebrating its unique contribution to humanity.

The vineyards of Lo Zoccolaio estate boast one of the finest exposures in the region. Exposure is a crucial factor for grape varieties like “Nebbiolo da Barolo,” demanding specific soil and climatic conditions.

All the estate’s vineyards, scattered across the hills, create a sublime harmony. These vineyards are a captivating spectacle for visitors and yield exceptional grapes.

Three Generations Bridging Tradition and Innovation

Cascina Lo Zoccolaio, a typical winery, owes its name to an ancient wooden shoe manufacturer who once resided there.

For three generations, Cascina Lo Zoccolaio has passed down the values of tradition and innovation. We began with the ‘modernism’ of barrique aging, only to return to the use of larger wooden casks. Architectural choices were revisited during recent renovations, embracing a more contemporary aesthetic with materials and colors inspired by the territory.

Lo Zoccolaio estate, in addition to the vineyards in the municipality of Barolo, also owns vineyards in Ornate, Monforte d’Alba, plots in Verduno, and the Ravera locality in Novello. Here, the eponymous and prestigious Ravera cru, the black label, is produced.

Lo Zoccolaio winery follows the traditional process precisely. In the vineyard, grapes are treated with love and respect, which means that Lo Zoccolaio’s guidelines do not involve the use of herbicides. Furthermore, controlled ground cover is maintained between the rows through cover cropping, respecting the rhythms of nature.

Harvesting is strictly manual. Only the best grapes, with lower yields but better quality, are selected.

Winemaking

From harvest, we move to destemming and soft pressing. This is followed by fermentation in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature of 28 °C.

The must remains in contact with the skins for 18 days. After racking, the cellar conditions are created for a perfect malolactic fermentation.

Aging

The wine matures in large Slavonian oak barrels (2,500 liters) for 42 months and refines in the bottle for 6 months before being sold.

All steps are taken with care, leaving nothing to chance. Everything is done in accordance with tradition, utilizing the most modern methodologies and tools.
