Distillates, liqueurs, and bitters are they synonyms?
No, distillates, liqueurs, and bitters are not synonyms.
Liqueur
Liqueur is a solution composed of plant elements and alcohol, enriched with flavors and sugars.
Liqueurs are produced by cold/hot mixing the substances extracted from herbs or fruit dissolved in a solution of pure alcohol, water, and sugar.
Examples of liqueurs are Gran Marnier, Amaretto Di Saronno, Maraschino, and Limoncello.
Bitter
Bitter or bitter liqueur is composed of distilled, macerated, or mixed plant substances with alcohol or alcoholic distillates. The final products are predominantly bitter beverages.
Bitter is produced in two phases:
- Infusion: plant substances – herbs and/or ground roots – are pulverized and immersed in a solution of water and alcohol to macerate for many months
- Distillation: the infusion is mixed with the liquid isolated by distillation. This separates the volatile components from the fermented substance based on their different boiling points
Examples of bitters are Jägermeister, Unicum, and Fernet Branca.
Distillate
The distillate is obtained from the fermentation of juices obtained from cereals, tubers, fruit, or wine into alcohol. No sugars or flavors are added.
To produce the distillate, the process begins with distillation in a still of a fermented substance, without the addition of sugars and flavors.
Once the must is prepared, it is fermented with the addition of yeast, and then the actual distillation takes place.
Examples of distillates include brandy, gin, grappa, rum, tequila, vodka, and whisky.
Golden Dream
Ingredients
- 2 cl Galliano liqueur
- 2 cl triple sec
- 2 cl orange juice
- 1 cl fresh cream
Preparation
- Pour the ingredients into a shaker filled with ice
- Shake vigorously for a few seconds
- Strain and pour into a chilled cocktail glass
Gulf
Ingredients
- 50 g lemon ice cream
- 2 strawberries
- 1 slice of lemon
- 3 cl limoncello
- Melon and 1 maraschino cherry
Preparation
- Blend all ingredients until smooth
- Pour into a glass
- Decorate and add two straws
Grasshopper
Ingredients
- 2 cl green crème de menthe
- 2 cl crème de cacao
- 2 cl fresh cream
Preparation
- Pour all ingredients into a shaker filled with ice
- Shake vigorously for a few seconds
- Strain and pour into a chilled cocktail glass
Japanese Slipper
Ingredients
- 3 cl Midori
- 3 cl triple sec
- 3 cl fresh lemon juice
- 1 slice of melon for garnish
Preparation
- Pour all ingredients into a shaker filled with ice
- Shake well
- Strain and pour into a cocktail glass
- Garnish with a slice of ripe melon
