You’re preparing for a party and you head out to grab a few bottles of Italian wine for the occasion. You land on the sparkling wines seeing as they’re perfect for a celebration. And you’re immediately confronted with rows upon rows of potential choices.
Instead of closely considering which choice to make, you grab the first generic brand that you see. After all, a sparkling wine is a sparkling wine, right? They all taste the same…
Except they don’t.
And you’re going to discover that for yourself as soon as you take your first sip. The generic wine won’t have any of the body that a great Italian sparkling wine would have. It won’t have the depth of flavour or the balance either.
If only you’d gone for a renowned sparkling wine instead.
If only you’d chosen a Prosecco!
If you’re a long-time reader of the Xtrawine blog, you know that we’re huge fans of Prosecco and are always keen to talk about it. In this article, we’re going to point out just a few of the reasons why you should go for a Prosecco over a generic sparkling wine.
Reason #1 – The Taste
Let’s start with the most important reason of all – the taste.
Prosecco is one of the wines that falls under the guidelines of the DOC in Italy. That means its production is closely regulated. The wine has to contain specific grapes and can only be made in certain regions of the country. This level of control means that you get a fair amount of consistency across different Proseccos.
Of course, each producer is still more than capable of adding their own special something into the mix.
The point is that Prosecco simply tastes better than the generic sparkling white wines that you may find on supermarket shelves. It has body and passion behind it, which you’ll appreciate after pouring that first glass.
Reason #2 – There’s a Good Range
Sticking with the taste theme, you also have the fact that there’s a solid range of Proseccos for you to choose from.
For example, you can find both dry and sweet Proseccos, each of which offer something a little bit different. That’s not something you’re going to find with generic sparkling wines, which are almost always sweet. If you want a dryer taste, you’ll need to explore beyond the basic levels of sparkling wine.
Reason #3 – You Know What You’re Getting
Just how much care went into the generic bottle of wine that you’re drinking?
Who produced it and what guidelines did they stick to when making their wine?
Odds are that you can’t provide an answer to those question. And the simple reason for this is that there isn’t any information out there for the generic wines you might buy. Even if you research them online, you’re not going to find a whole lot of information.
The issue here is that not knowing much about the wine and how it’s made can create complications. For example, you could end up buying a generic wine that uses ingredients that you don’t want to consume.
With Prosecco, you know that you’re getting something that’s highly regulated. As mentioned above, the DOC’s controls ensure consistency in quality. But they also ensure consistency in production methods, which means you don’t have to worry about anything untoward getting into your wine.
Reason #4 – Prosecco Excites People
Just picture the scene.
You have a group of friends around for a dinner party. The meal ends and you decide to have a last little glass of wine. You tell everybody that you’re going to break out a little but of the bubbly stuff and the anticipation rises…
Then you pour them a generic sparkling wine out of a bottle that doesn’t even have a recognisable label.
You can just feel the energy seep out of the room. Sure, your friends will drink the stuff out of sheer politeness. But there’s no getting away from the fact that you just disappointed them with your wine selection.
On the flipside, bringing out a bottle of Prosecco gets people excited. They know that they’re getting quality and the energy in the room will reflect this fact.
Reason #5 – Prosecco Actually Has Several Health Benefits
We’ve all heard that Italian wines can help you in terms of keeping your heart healthy. Most point to red wines as being the best for this purpose, though a sparkling wine can also give your heart a good boost.
However, Prosecco has some additional health benefits that you may not already know about.
For example, research shows that the wine, when consumed in moderation, is actually very good for your memory. Specifically, researchers from the University of Reading in the UK found that drinking a glass or two of Prosecco every week could help you to reverse the memory loss issues that often come with ageing.
There’s also some research to suggest that Prosecco strengthens your immune system, which means it can provide protection against colds and similar ailments. Plus, many argue that the wine has numerous benefits for the skin.
Reason #6 – It Can Actually Age
Now, we’re not going to claim that a Prosecco has decades of ageing potential under its belt. However, you can certainly store one for a couple of years and find that it has different characteristics thanks to the ageing process.
You’re generally not going to find that with a generic wine. Such wines need to be consumed almost as soon as you buy them. Otherwise, they’ll quickly lose their fizz and their flavour as they’re simply not created with ageing in mind.
The point is that you can get an entirely different experience from drinking an aged Prosecco. Drinking an aged generic wine means you’ll probably end up with something that’s flat and tastes like vinegar.
The Final Word
So, those are six reasons why you should definitely go for Prosecco over a generic sparkling wine.
