Tequila: Some Information
Tequila is a distilled beverage from Mexico, obtained through the fermentation of sugars found in the agave plant followed by distillation. In Mexico, various types of agave grow, with the most prestigious being the blue agave, which grows only in the city of Tequila and certain areas of Jalisco.
Tequila is categorized based on aging:
- Reposado: aged in oak barrels for at least 3 months
- Añejo: aged from 1 to 3 years in contact with wood
- Extra añejo: aged beyond 3 years
When choosing tequila, opt for one made with 100% agave for quality. According to Mexican law, tequila must contain at least 51% agave. However, 100% agave indicates higher quality.
