This week we focus on Piedmont (Piemonte). We have talked about Classical Method and the great sparkling wines of Piedmont. We now meet another great producer of the area: Martini Family Estate. This estate is important because it comprises of three wineries, each highly specialised: Cascina Lo Zoccolaio, La Toledana and Villa Lanata. These produce high quality wines in one of the richest and best known Italian wine regions that we will never get tired of exploring!
Withour further ado, let’s discover them!
1. Red Wine excellence with Cascina Lo Zoccolaio
The Cascina Lo Zoccolaio, takes the name from the area where it is located: Bricco di Barolo.
The winery has 30 hectares of vineyards, 14 of which are cultivated with Nebbiolo grapes for Barolo. The vineyards are exposed to the southwest, on the Bricco Barolo coast which from the Castle of Barolo goes up towards Monforte.
The wines produced by this farm are real jewels, oenological masterpieces to be enjoyed to make every special moment unforgettable.
Lo Zoccolaio, in fact, produces exclusively red wines with grapes from its own vineyards located in Barolo, Monforte d’Alba, Novello (a small village that counts 927 inhabitants!) and Verduno. But what is most important is that each phase of the wine making in this wonderful area of Piedmont is led by the passion and the incredible know-how of the producers and the wine experts that have dedicated their lives to the art and science of wine-making.
To further stress the importance of the passion, the harvest is done by hand and without haste. Only the best bunches are selected to be expressed in the bottle. From the soft sqeezing of the grapes, to the fermentation, to the refinement, up to the bottle, nothing is overlooked, everything takes place respecting tradition but with the most modern methods and tools.
The Barbera d’Alba Suculè and the Langhe Rosso Baccanera, a blend of Barbera, Merlot, Nebbiolo and Cabernet Sauvignon are famous and award-winning. The classic Barolo and Cru Ravera, a Riserva of the well-known municipality of Novello. Complete the portfolio a unique Langhe Pinot Noir called Re Noir.
2. White wine excellence: La Toledana
La Toledana is an estate owned by the Martini family, located in Gavi, an area dedicated for the production of Gavi, the greatest Piemontese white wine.
The company takes its name from the historic Villa that dominates the estate of Cortese vineyards. The company produces Toledana Gavi di Gavi, the highest expression of the terroir, the result is the project “Vigne Rade“.
Due to its natural conformation, the vineyard has areas where the rows are more sparse and the grapes obtain more nourishment. By respecting the natural characteristics of the terroir in the vineyard and in the cellar, a wine with unique organoleptic notes is thus obtained: a white wine for “aging”. Gavi from the municipality of Gavi Toledana, modernity and tradition in a single glass.
3. Chardonnay passion with Villa Lanata
Last but not least, let’s talk about Villa Lanata . This is a unique estate, created to enhance the perfection of the Moscato and Chardonnay grapes in the pictoresque village of Cossano Belbo, Langhe region.
Thwinery takes the name from the splendid Villa overlooking the vineyard, on the hill called “la Rovere“, once owned by Cardinal Lanata. The Villa Lanata estate owns 53 hectares of vineyards in the municipalities of Cossano Belbo and Castino. Most of the 45 hectares are Moscato are on the steep hill around the Villa. Villa Lanata produces Langhe Chardonnay, Piemonte Rosso a bland of Barbera, Nebbiolo and Merlot and De Rosis a Nebbiolo-based Piedmont Rosé.
