Christmas is approaching, and it’s time to consider the wines for your festive toasts with friends and family. Here are two wines from Fontanafredda that should absolutely be part of your lunches and dinners: the Alta Langa Limited Edition 2019 and the Moscato d’Asti Moncucco 2022.
ALTA LANGA LIMITED EDITION 2019
Located in the Langhe, among the world’s most renowned hills for viticulture, in the heart of the 50th Italian UNESCO World Heritage site. Here, the grapes of Pinot Nero and Chardonnay, either vinified separately or blended in varying percentages, give life to Alta Langa.
The first classic method produced in Italy was developed in the early 19th century by a group of 7 producers, including Fontanafredda, who began crafting high-quality sparkling wines.
Fontanafredda has been a pioneering winery in sparkling wine innovations since the 1950s when it produced its first bottle-fermented sparkling wine, the “Contessa Rosa,” a precursor to Alta Langa. Today, the winery is part of the Alta Langa Consortium, a group of over 40 producers united by the desire to rediscover and enhance traditional Piedmontese sparkling wine production techniques.
The Alta Langa Limited Edition 2019 fully embodies the sparkling wine tradition of southern Piedmont, where Pinot Nero and Chardonnay thrive. Aged for at least 30 months on its lees, it consistently reflects the vintage. It is characterized by finesse, balance, structure, and a captivating effervescence.
A fresh and fruity classic method, with excellent aromatic complexity. With a straw-yellow color and green reflections, it offers notes of honey, white-fleshed peach, grapefruit, and basil on the nose. The taste is fruity and savory, with a sweet and lingering finish. Its fine and persistent perlage makes it excellent as an aperitif, and its undeniable personality makes it an excellent pairing for all courses.
The Alta Langa Limited Edition 2019 is undoubtedly the ideal sparkling wine for toasting in good company.
MOSCATO D’ASTI MONCUCCO
Moscato is one of the most expressive grape varieties in Piedmont, capable of producing a wine with a distinctive aroma, delicate and refined taste, characterized by its pronounced but never overwhelming sweetness.
The Moscato d’Asti Moncucco by Fontanafredda originates from the hill overlooking Santo Stefano Belbo, famous for Moscato grapes. Harvested at full ripeness, it gives life to an exhilarating, rich, and creamy sweet wine with a beautiful acidic freshness and an impressive aging potential.
