Alsace winemakers strive to create dry, intense, and robust wines. They ferment every gram of sugar and often add more sugar to increase alcohol content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unlike Alsace wines, German wines are extremely light, barely hinting at their natural essence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-alsace-a-bit-of-history\">Alsace: A Bit of History<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>modern wine industry<\/strong> <strong>owes<\/strong> its development<strong> to farmers who evolved into merchants<\/strong>, branding their wines and those of their neighbors, distinguishing them only by grape variety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many of these farmers worked the land they owned as far back as the 17th century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alsace boasts <strong>France&#8217;s first cooperative winery<\/strong>, established in <strong>1895<\/strong>. Additionally, there are cooperatives such as Euisheim, Kietzheim, Beblenheim, and Westhalten.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Renowned names in Alsace include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.xtrawine.com\/collections\/hugel-fils\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hugel<\/a>, Dopff, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.xtrawine.com\/it\/collections\/trimbach\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Trimbach<\/a>, Humbrecht, Becker, Kuehn, and Mur\u00e9.<\/p>\n<\/div><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"679\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.xtrawine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/vini-dell-alsazia-07-679x1024.webp\" alt=\"Route des vins d'Alsace\" class=\"wp-image-49064 size-full\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-alsace-cultivated-grape-varieties\">Alsace: Cultivated Grape Varieties<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The grapes that lend their name and unique qualities to Alsace wines include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.xtrawine.com\/collections\/wines\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Auxerrois<\/strong><\/a>: yielding soft wines<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.xtrawine.com\/collections\/traminer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Gew\u00fcrztraminer<\/strong><\/a>: the perfect symbol of the region, offering dry wines with fruity aromas, pairing well with Alsace cuisine<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Muscat<\/strong>: a blend of Muscat Ottonel and Muscat Blanc, producing a dry and frank wine, ideal as an aperitif<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"563\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.xtrawine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/vini-dell-alsazia-05.webp\" alt=\"Tipico paesaggio alsaziano\" class=\"wp-image-49067\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.xtrawine.com\/collections\/pinot-blanc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Pinot Blanc<\/strong><\/a>: conveying a characteristic smoky note<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.xtrawine.com\/collections\/pinot-gris\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Pinot Gris<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.xtrawine.com\/it\/collections\/riesling\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Riesling<\/strong><\/a>: producing the finest white wines in Alsace and Germany<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.xtrawine.com\/collections\/sylvaner\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Sylvaner<\/strong><\/a>: Alsace&#8217;s version is light and sometimes pleasantly tart, often served as the first wine in a typical dinner, followed by Riesling<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The &#8220;noble&#8221; grape varieties of Alsace are Riesling, Pinot Gris, Gew\u00fcrztraminer, and Muscat. Only these varieties can be labeled as <em>Alsace Grand Cru<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-climate\">Climate<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>What sets Alsace apart from all other French wine regions is its <strong>low rainfall<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sometimes, drought damages the vines, but maturation is assured. In Alsace, like in Burgundy, a chain of hills facing east creates an ideal environment for vineyards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Rocky spurs and recesses provide additional shelter and privileged exposure of east-facing slopes<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"563\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.xtrawine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/vini-dell-alsazia-02.webp\" alt=\"Vigneto alsaziano\" class=\"wp-image-49058\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Alsace is very sunny. The high <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vosges\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Vosges<\/a> mountain range to the west is the secret behind vineyards cultivated on the mountain&#8217;s slopes\u2014180-360 meters above sea level\u2014along a strip of vegetation that rarely exceeds one and a half kilometers in width.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A vineyard&#8217;s temperature can vary by 1 \u00b0C depending on whether there is a dense pine forest nearby or a grove of young oaks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Every slight nuance of the landscape is reflected in the alignment of rows, positioned to capture every ray of sunshine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-winemaking\">Winemaking<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Most winemakers in the region have <strong>eliminated secondary malolactic fermentation for white wines<\/strong>. Instead, in the 6% of red wines produced in the region, it is necessary to soften the wine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"662\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.xtrawine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/vini-dell-alsazia-06.webp\" alt=\"Affinamento in botti in una cantina alsaziana\" class=\"wp-image-49060\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Alsace wine has a fruity flavor, achieved by <strong>using old oval barrels that do not impart a woody aroma<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In autumn, local producers maximize production by producing both late-harvest wines and Selection de Grains Nobles. These botrytized wines require multiple harvests and are even sweeter and rarer.
