In reality, Scotland and Ireland vie for the top spot in whisky production. Irish whiskey tends to be smoother on the palate and lacks the peaty notes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In third place, there&#8217;s <strong>American whiskey<\/strong>, with a dominant flavor of corn or rye.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Next is <strong>Canadian whisky<\/strong>, produced with rye-based mashes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lastly, there&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.xtrawine.com\/en\/xtrawinexperience-japanese-whisky\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Japanese whisky<\/strong><\/a>, inspired by Scotch production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"537\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.xtrawine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/whisky-alcuni-cocktail-07.webp\" alt=\"Whisky barrels\" class=\"wp-image-47996\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-to-choose-a-good-whisky\">How to Choose a Good Whisky<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Whiskey or whisky<\/strong>: whiskey refers to Irish or American, while whisky is Scottish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Categories<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Blended Scotch<\/strong>: a blend of grain and malt whiskies, usually lighter and more affordable.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Single Malt<\/strong>: whisky from a single distillery.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Blended Malt<\/strong>: a blend of single malts from two or more distilleries.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Cask Strength<\/strong>: whisky aged in the cask.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Single Cask<\/strong>: bottled directly from the cask.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Which one to choose? If undecided, opt for a blended malt for a perfectly balanced flavor profile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Glass<\/strong>: The correct glass for savoring whisky is a wide and straight tumbler or a tulip-shaped glass.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tasting<\/strong>: A good whisky should be balanced and elegant both on the nose and palate. The most famous attributes its creation to the bar at the Manhattan Club in New York in 1874, during a party honoring the newly elected Governor W. J. Thomas, known as The Professor, describes this cocktail in the first <em>American mixology book, How to Mix Drinks,<\/em> published in the United States in 1862.
