We&#8217;ve discussed Tuscan wine with <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.xtrawine.com\/en\/xtrawinexperience-7-tuscany\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">xtraWinexperience<\/a>. Today, I want to focus on the best Tuscan wines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-are-the-most-famous-tuscan-wines\">What are the most famous Tuscan wines?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The most famous Tuscan wines are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"#h-chianti-classico\">Chianti Classico<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"#h-brunello-of-montalcino\">Brunello of Montalcino<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"#h-bolgheri\">Bolgheri<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"#h-vino-nobile-of-montepulciano\">Vino Nobile of Montepulciano<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-chianti-classico\">Chianti Classico<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.xtrawine.com\/en\/wines\/tuscany-chianti-classico-docg\/26+544?c=195\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Chianti Classico<\/a> is the <strong>typical wine of Tuscany<\/strong>. In 1996, Chianti Classico separated from the Chianti world forever. Its production regulations require lower yields compared to Chianti, with a maximum yield of just 75 quintals per hectare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It also excludes white grape varieties. The regulations allow the use of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.xtrawine.com\/collections\/sangiovese\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sangiovese<\/a>, with a minimum of 80%, along with other indigenous grape varieties such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.xtrawine.com\/collections\/wines\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Canaiolo<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.xtrawine.com\/collections\/wines\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Colorino<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.xtrawine.com\/collections\/malvasia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Malvasia Nera<\/a>, or international grape varieties like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.xtrawine.com\/collections\/cabernet\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cabernet Sauvignon<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.xtrawine.com\/collections\/merlot\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Merlot<\/a>. <strong>Sangiovese is<\/strong> <strong>the<\/strong> <strong>quintessential Tuscan grape variety<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.xtrawine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/migliori-vini-toscani-02-1024x576.webp\" alt=\"best tuscan wines\" class=\"wp-image-46535\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The Chianti Classico <strong>territory<\/strong> covers nine municipalities between Florence and Siena, making it a vast area with 6,800 hectares producing 30 million bottles annually. This diversity in terroir results in a lack of uniformity in the wine&#8217;s characteristics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>soil<\/strong>, characterized by <strong>limestone<\/strong> clay <strong>with galestro<\/strong> and <strong>alberese subsoil<\/strong>, imparts great sapidity and elegance to the Sangiovese.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Chianti Classico matures<\/strong> for <strong>one year<\/strong> before entering the market, while Chianti Classico <strong>Riserva<\/strong> ages for <strong>24 months<\/strong>, and the <strong>Gran Selezione<\/strong> ages for <strong>30 months<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-brunello-of-montalcino\">Brunello of Montalcino<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Another important wine is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.xtrawine.com\/collections\/brunello-di-montalcino\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Brunello<\/a>, with a 150-year history. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.xtrawine.com\/collections\/biondi-santi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Biondi Santi<\/a> family made this wine famous in Italy and worldwide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The production <strong>territory<\/strong> forms an almost <strong>circular area<\/strong> with a <strong>diameter<\/strong> of <strong>16 kilometers<\/strong>. In this area, Sangiovese is known as Brunello, distinguished by its dark-colored berries compared to other Sangiovese biotypes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Brunello is produced exclusively from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.xtrawine.com\/collections\/sangiovese\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sangiovese<\/a> grapes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>soils<\/strong> in this region <strong>vary<\/strong>, including <strong>limestone<\/strong>, <strong>schist<\/strong>, <strong>galestro<\/strong>, <strong>alberese<\/strong>, and <strong>alluvial deposits<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.xtrawine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/migliori-vini-toscani-04-1024x576.webp\" alt=\"best tuscan wines\" class=\"wp-image-46538\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Our production area is characterized by <strong>four unique slopes<\/strong>, each contributing to the distinctive flavors of our wines:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Northern Slope<\/strong>: home to the rugged crests and Montosoli, this region experiences a continental climate with remarkable temperature variations, enhancing the complexity of our grapes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Western Slope<\/strong>: gazing towards the sea, this slope basks in a warm climate, invigorated by refreshing maritime breezes, perfect for cultivating our exceptional grapes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Eastern Slope<\/strong>: with the coolest climate among the slopes, grapes here undergo a slower and more deliberate maturation process, resulting in wines of unparalleled depth and character<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Southern Slope<\/strong>: extending towards the Val d&#8217;Orcia, this area is sheltered from strong winds, fostering higher temperatures and earlier grape ripening, giving our wines a unique and distinct personality<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>After a long aging period in the cellar, the wine enters the market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Brunello has a <strong>ruby color<\/strong> with <strong>intense fruit jam aromas<\/strong> and spicy notes. On the <strong>palate<\/strong>, the wine is <strong>powerful with excellent softness<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The annual production is close to 10 million bottles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-bolgheri\">Bolgheri<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Bolgheri is Italy&#8217;s answer to Bordeaux. In 1944, the Marquis <a href=\"https:\/\/www.xtrawine.com\/collections\/marchesi-incisa-della-rocchetta\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Incisa della Rocchetta<\/a> planted 1.5 hectares of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc within <a href=\"https:\/\/www.xtrawine.com\/collections\/tenuta-san-guido\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Tenuta San Guido<\/a>, introducing barrique aging to Italy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.xtrawine.com\/collections\/bolgheri-wines\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bolgheri<\/a> <strong>production territory<\/strong> can be divided into t<strong>hree main areas<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol>\n<li><strong>hills<\/strong> with older alluvial deposits<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>intermediate area<\/strong> with pebbly alluvial soils rich in iron oxide<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>the area closest to the sea<\/strong> with a mixture of river and marine deposits<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>The best vineyards are located at the foot of the hills and in the plain between Bolgheri and the southern area of Castagneto Carducci.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.xtrawine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/migliori-vini-toscani-03-1024x576.webp\" alt=\"best tuscan wines\" class=\"wp-image-46541\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The current Bolgheri DOC regulations allow the use of single grape varieties (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.xtrawine.com\/collections\/cabernet\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cabernet Sauvignon<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.xtrawine.com\/collections\/cabernet\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cabernet Franc<\/a>, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.xtrawine.com\/collections\/merlot\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Merlot<\/a>) for Bolgheri Rosso and Rosato. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.xtrawine.com\/collections\/syrah\">Syrah<\/a> and Sangiovese are also permitted (up to 50%), along with small percentages of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.xtrawine.com\/collections\/petit-verdot\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Petit Verdot<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.xtrawine.com\/collections\/bolgheri-sassicaia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Bolgheri Sassiccaia<\/strong><\/a> must contain <strong>at least 80% Cabernet Sauvignon<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bolgheri wine has a <strong>deep ruby color<\/strong> with <strong>blackberry aromas<\/strong> and a warm, <strong>soft palate<\/strong> with a <strong>dense tannic structure<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The total production of Bolgheri DOC is around 5 million bottles per year, with Bolgheri Sassiccaia alone exceeding 200,000 units.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-vino-nobile-of-montepulciano\">Vino Nobile of Montepulciano<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.xtrawine.com\/collections\/nobile-di-montepulciano\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Vino Nobile di Montepulciano<\/a> is a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_Italian_DOCG_wines\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">DOCG wine<\/a> established in 1980.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>production territory<\/strong> extends over <strong>1,300 hectares<\/strong>, with vineyards situated at altitudes ranging from 250 to 600 meters above sea level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.xtrawine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/migliori-vini-toscani-05-1024x576.webp\" alt=\"best tuscan wines\" class=\"wp-image-46544\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>vineyards<\/strong> in the town of Montepulciano are <strong>mainly sandy<\/strong> and <strong>clay-sandy<\/strong> <strong>with pebbles<\/strong> and <strong>fossils<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To produce Vino Nobile, Sangiovese grapes, locally known as Prugnolo Gentile, must be used for a minimum of 70%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The wine undergoes <strong>at least 2 years of aging in the cellar<\/strong>, with a 3-year period for Riserva.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-discover-best-tuscan-wines-on-xtrawine\">Discover best Tuscan wines on xtraWine!<\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-rounded\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.xtrawine.com\/en\/wines\/red-tuscany\/195+26?c=384\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"171\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.xtrawine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/image-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-46567\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1.7543859649122806;width:198px;height:auto\"\/><\/a><\/figure><\/div><\/span>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Discover the most famous Tuscan wines: Chianti Classico, Brunello, Bolgheri, and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano.
