Legend has it that the Emperor Marcus Aurelius Probus wanted the Roman legions to bring a vine with them, so that it could be planted in the newly conquered territory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This rite made the vine plant the symbol of the power of the Roman Empire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.xtrawine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/terme-romane.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-38748\" width=\"446\" height=\"311\"\/><figcaption><sup>Roman Baths, Source: https:\/\/frosinone.italiani.it\/scopricitta\/le-terme-di-supino\/<\/sup><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Latium, lands and wines to discover<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Divided between the sea, plains and hills, the region is an ideal territory for the proliferation of vines. With a vine-growing area of almost 28,000 hectares, it is certainly a respectable size, producing more than 2 million hectolitres of wine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With volcanic soils, lakes, hilly areas and reclaimed plains (the Agro Pontino), this varied territory allows for a diversified production of wines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.xtrawine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Lazio-Wine-Map-Italy-WineFolly-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-38727\" width=\"485\" height=\"364\"\/><figcaption><sup>Lazio Wine Map, Source: https:\/\/winefolly.com\/deep-dive\/the-wines-to-know-from-lazio\/<\/sup><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Wines of Lazio, each area with its own product<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitcastelliromani.it\/en\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.visitcastelliromani.it\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Castelli Romani<\/a> area is famous for the lakes of Castelgandolfo, Nemi and Bracciano and for Monte Porzio Catone and Grottaferrata.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This area is also home to the vineyards of some of Lazio&#8217;s most important grapes, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.xtrawine.com\/collections\/wines\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.xtrawine.com\/collections\/wines\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">malvasia putinata<\/a> and where a third of the region&#8217;s wine production is concentrated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Trebbiano, the oldest wine in the area, is also cultivated here, whose origin dates back to the Roman Empire: in fact, the famous Roman writer Pliny wrote about trebulanum wine in Tuscany and Latium.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Malvasia, on the other hand, has Greek origins: its name derives from Monemvasia, the city where the vine plant was imported.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ciociaria\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ciociaria\"> <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.xtrawine.com\/collections\/lazio\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.xtrawine.com\/collections\/lazio\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ciociaria area<\/a>, which includes the area of Frosinone, sees the largest production of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.quattrocalici.it\/denominazioni\/cesanese-del-piglio-o-piglio-docg\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.quattrocalici.it\/denominazioni\/cesanese-del-piglio-o-piglio-docg\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cesanese del Piglio Docg<\/a>, a very ancient wine and a real treasure for this region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>In Ciociaria, Passerina del Frusinate IGT is also produced.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Continuing our tour, we arrive in the province of <strong>Latina,<\/strong> where we find the Nero Buono di Cori and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.quattrocalici.it\/vitigni\/moscato-di-terracina\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.quattrocalici.it\/vitigni\/moscato-di-terracina\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Moscato di Terracina.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our journey ends in the province of <strong>Viterbo<\/strong> where  the Aleatico di Gradoli, the Malvasia Bianca and the white Trebbiano are cultivated, and  where the famous wine <a href=\"https:\/\/www.xtrawine.com\/products\/falesco-est-est-est-di-montefiascone-poggio-dei-gelsi-2021\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.xtrawine.com\/products\/falesco-est-est-est-di-montefiascone-poggio-dei-gelsi-2021\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Est!
