Autumn is upon us and, as beautiful as this time of year so often is, there\u2019s no denying the fact that many of us are going to miss the warmer days that summer brings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With that in mind, you\u2019re probably wondering why this article is going to be all about Italian red wine ice cream.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After all, who wants to eat ice cream when the weather gets colder. Surely, the goal should be to find ways to warm yourself up, rather than cooling yourself down with a frozen dessert.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To that, we say, in the nicest way possible\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nonsense!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is never a bad time for ice cream. We could be experiencing the coldest winter in decades and we\u2019d still find time (and space in our bellies) for some nice and tasty ice cream!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And that\u2019s especially the case when we can combine good ice cream with a great Italian red wine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That brings us right back to the subject of this article.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here, we\u2019re going to share a delightful recipe for a tasty red wine ice cream that will knock your socks off, no matter what time of year it is. Let\u2019s get started with\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Ingredients<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before we get started with this recipe, we need to give credit where credit is due. This recipe comes from the brilliant <em>Cooking With Janica<\/em>, which you can find at <a href=\"https:\/\/cookingwithjanica.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">https:\/\/cookingwithjanica.com\/<\/a>. We\u2019ve selected this recipe because it&#8217;s simple, fast, and results in the creation of a red wine ice cream that we fell in love with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The recipe takes a little over an hour to complete from start to finish. By the end, you\u2019ll have enough ice cream to serve five people, which makes it a perfect dessert for a family meal. Of course, you could just keep it all for yourself and enjoy a portion of ice cream every evening for almost a week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The choice is yours!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, let\u2019s dig into what you\u2019re going to need to prepare this recipe:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>A bottle of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.xtrawine.com\/collections\/red-wines\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Italian red wine<\/a> of your choice. Go with your gut on this one. Any red wine will do a good job, so your choice is going to come down to which wine you think will maintain its qualities when combined with ice cream.<\/li><li>A cup of half and half.<\/li><li>Four egg yolks<\/li><li>Two-thirds of a cup of brown sugar.<\/li><li>Two cups of heavy whipping cream.<\/li><li>A vanilla bean.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ll also need an ice cream maker for the final step.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With your ingredients at hand, you\u2019re ready to start preparing your delicious dessert.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Method<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are a few steps to get through here. Happily, they\u2019re all pretty simple, which means you shouldn\u2019t have too much trouble with putting this recipe together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Step One<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before anything else, you need to get your red wine ready for turning into ice cream. That means reducing it down into a syrup that you can mix with the rest of the ingredients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pour the entire bottle of Italian red wine into a pot and leave it to simmer over a low-medium flame. Do this until the wine has been reduced so much that you\u2019re left with just a single cup of liquid. This can take up to an hour. Once the wine is reduced, pour it into a separate container and set it aside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Step Two<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Grab a different pot and pour your brown sugar and whipping cream into it. Then, use a sharp knife to slice your vanilla bean in half, using the knife to then scrape out the bean\u2019s innards into the pot. You can add the bean pod to the pot while you\u2019re at it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Place the pot over a medium flame and stir constantly until the mixture starts to steam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Do not allow it to boil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Step Three<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Use a whisk, fork or mixer to beat your egg yolks until they\u2019re a lighter colour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Remove the vanilla bean pod from your whipping cream mixture and then slowly pour the cream into the egg yolks. Be patient here. Dumping the cream into the yolks can cause the mixture to curdle. Take it slow and steady to get it right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Step Four<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With the cream and eggs combined, slowly pour the entire mixture back into your pot and cook it over a medium flame. The mixture should thicken, taking on the same consistency as custard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Use a wooden spoon to test the mixture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If it sticks to the back of the spoon then it\u2019s done. Remove the pot from the heat at that point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Step Five<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Grab a large bowl and pour the mixture through a strainer and into the bowl. Add your reduced wine and your half and half. Then, stir it all together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Step Six<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Place the bowl in the fridge for an hour or two, allowing it to cool down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once cool, add the mixture to your ice cream maker and freeze it based on the instructions the maker gives you. You\u2019ll generally find that you\u2019ll have to freeze the ice cream for about 30 minutes, though you can freeze it for longer if you want harder ice cream.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Final Word<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And that\u2019s it!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This recipe gives you a gorgeous red wine ice cream that you can enjoy for days to come. It\u2019s simple to follow, though it does take a little bit of time to get all of the ingredients properly prepared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All that\u2019s left now is to combine your dessert with a bottle of wine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We recommend choosing a sweet and fruity red wine.
