A lot of people don\u2019t really think of Argentina when they\u2019re asked to name the best wine countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of course, Italy tends to be the first country that people think of. Italian wines have a long lineage of quality that nobody can argue with. The same goes for France and Spain, which are two of the other countries that immediately come to mind. Even the United States, with its shorter history, is considered one of the top wine countries based on both volume and quantity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But Argentina?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most people wouldn\u2019t think of it, at least as an immediate choice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That\u2019s a true shame in our eyes because Argentina has a lot to offer to the wine industry. So, in this article, we want to shed some light on why you should appreciate the efforts of producers in the country a little more and what helps Argentinian wines stand out from their Italian counterparts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Who knows?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fact #1 \u2013 Advanced Irrigation Systems Make the Wines Possible<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you do know a little bit about Argentinian wines, you probably know that Mendoza is the most important wine region in the country. It\u2019s responsible for about two-thirds of the country\u2019s production and its wines are phenomenal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What you may not know is that it wasn\u2019t that long ago when Mendoza was an inhospitable wasteland!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That may be a slight exaggeration, but it\u2019s true that Mendoza used to be an extremely dry and arid area. This was the result of it being a mining region, where engineering took precedence over agriculture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, how did this arid landscape turn into stunning wine territory?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Through one of the most advanced irrigation systems ever concocted!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where countries like Italy have plenty of terrain that is naturally favourable to wines, Argentinian producers had to make their terrain favourable through feats of engineering that many others couldn\u2019t comprehend at the time. It\u2019s thanks to this irrigation system that the country\u2019s wine producers are able to make use of land that was once considered completely unsuitable for agriculture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When we talk about passion for wine, this is that passion in action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An entire region dedicated itself to transforming its terroir just so it could start making wine. While Mendoza may not have the rich wine history of Italy\u2019s most famous regions, nobody can argue that it doesn\u2019t deserve the reputation it has based on the hard work and ingenuity of its producers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fact #2 \u2013 La Zonda Helps (And Hinders)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

La Zonda is the name of a warm wind that blows through Argentina\u2019s main wine territories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The interesting thing about this wind is that it can both create and solve problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When it\u2019s blowing fairly mildly, La Zonda helps to create a perfect environment for many of Argentina\u2019s favoured grapes to grow. Better yet, it also helps to eliminate common pests, which means producers don\u2019t have to rely as heavily on chemical pesticides.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This can lead to Argentinian wines tasting a little more natural than their counterparts from other countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unfortunately, La Zonda doesn\u2019t always play nice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When the wind really picks up, it can have a damaging effect on crops to the point where it destroys the grapes. Plus, it contributes to the arid nature of Argentina\u2019s wine country that we spoke about earlier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, in La Zonda we have a wind that both gives and takes. This leads to more unique challenges for Argentinian producers to overcome that Italian producers don\u2019t necessarily have to face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fact #3 \u2013 Malbec is the Most Popular Grape<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you know your French wines, you\u2019ve certainly heard of Malbec. It\u2019s one of the six grape varieties that producers are allowed to use when making Bordeaux. And it\u2019s one of France\u2019s most popular grapes as a result.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Italy, Malbec is rarely used outside of some northern regions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But in Argentina\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s the grape of choice for the vast majority of the country\u2019s wines. Argentina just happens to provide the perfect climate for Malbec, which means the country\u2019s version of the grape tends to be of exceptionally high quality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This marks another difference between Argentinian and Italian wines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Argentina\u2019s wines rely on Malbec and a small collection of other grapes. Italy\u2019s wines offer a lot more variety, though we can certainly argue that Argentina has Italy beat when it comes down to wines made using Malbec.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whether Argentina can compete with France when it comes to Malbec is a much more interesting debate to have!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fact #4 \u2013 Argentina Has a Longer Wine History Than You Might Expect<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s easy to assume that Argentina is a fairly recent addition to the global wine industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After all, it wasn\u2019t until the 1990s that the country\u2019s wines started coming to prominence. And it was in the 2000s when people start paying attention to the high quality of the country\u2019s best wines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, the reality is that Argentina has a deeper history with wine than you might think.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In fact, records show that early producers started cultivating the nation\u2019s native grape, Torront\u00e9s, over 300 years ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of course, the industry then was localised and not particularly widespread. Still, it goes to show that a lot more heritage goes into Argentina\u2019s wines than one might suspect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Still, there is a difference between Italy and Argentina here, as we know that Italy\u2019s land has been used for wine for thousands of years by various ancient civilisations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, it\u2019s important to note that Argentina\u2019s relatively shorter history with wine is by no means a reason to discard the wines it produces today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Final Word<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

We\u2019re delighted to see Argentinian wines<\/a> gaining popularity in recent years, not least because we respect the amazing efforts made to transform Mendoza and its other regions into viable wine terroir.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of course, there are differences between Argentinian and Italian wines, with climate, grape varieties, and experience all playing their parts. But there are plenty of amazing wines coming out of Argentina today, many of which are featured on the Xtrawine website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
