The 1960s was an important decade for the Italian wine industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was in this year that the DOC first launched and began assigning its conditions to some of the most important Italian wine territories<\/strong>. Created to ensure the quality of wines that the country exported around the world, the DOC has played a crucial role in Italy becoming the leading wine producer on the planet. It also helped to create guidelines and support for an industry that was still somewhat ailing from the after-effects of the Second World War.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was in the 1960s that the Italian wine industry truly began its recovery. And it\u2019s also back to the 1960s that we go to discover the story of the producer that we\u2019re going to profile in this article. It was in this decade that one man made the fateful decision to strike out on his own and found a winery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And that decision has led us to a wine that we recommend to all of our readers today. It\u2019s time to take a look at the history of Trer\u00e9 and one of the best Italian wines that you\u2019re going to find this Christmas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The History<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nestled in the hills of Faenza, which is a town of about 60,000 people that can trace its origins back to ancient times, Trer\u00e8 was founded with noble traditions in mind and a constant dedication to creating stunning wines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It all began in the 1960s when Valeriano Trer\u00e8 decided to purchase 14 acres of land. A farmer by trade, Trer\u00e8 had mastered the agricultural craft. However, he\u2019d always worked for other people, which led to him putting his own dreams on hold in the service of others. Valeriano came from a long line of Trer\u00e8s that had worked as farmers, but he was the first to strike out on his own to acquire his own land.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The big difference for him was that he wanted to focus solely on the production of Italian wine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Inspired by the gorgeous Romagna region that housed the land he bought, Valeriano started working on the production of three grapes that would ultimately define the Trer\u00e8 company \u2013 Sangiovese, Albana, and Trebbiano. While working on his land, Valeriano also focused on raising his family and he doted on his daughter Morena.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Morena ended up going to college in 1976, where she studied literature. Following her graduation, she got married and had a son of her own. And yet, she couldn\u2019t resist the call of the wine industry. Despite her education seeming to steer her away from her father\u2019s land, Morena eventually came back to the winery and told Valeriano that she wanted to work as part of the family wine company. Delighted with the decision, Valeriano gave her full control of the wine cellars and the family\u2019s story started in earnest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1978, the company acquired its first logo, with Morena\u2019s education proving valuable in terms of marketing and branding for the family. That logo served the family extremely well during its early expansion. However, they eventually replaced it with the Trer\u00e8 family coat of arms, which they discovered after extensive research. Now armed with branding that was perfectly emblematic of the family, the company was in the perfect position to expand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many years have passed since those early days of the company. However, Morena is quick to point out that her passion for Italian wine is as strong as it ever was. Today, she works with her son to tend the vines and grow the company. And when we talk about expansion, Trer\u00e8 has undergone something quite extensive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beginning with those first 14 acres, the company has purchased a lot of land since the 1960s. Today, its vineyards stretch over 35 hectares, of which 31 are dedicated solely to the vine. This has allowed the company to produce a wide array of wines, which means it can appeal to an even larger customer base. Again, we see Morena\u2019s business savvy at play here, as she\u2019s able to combine her father\u2019s passion for wine with a knack for building companies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trer\u00e8 has bucked many of the winemaking traditions of Romagna during its expansion, with its ability to grow 4,000 plants per hectare allowing for greater production on land that was previously thought to only be able to handle 2,000 plants per hectare previously. The company has also focused on the spurred cordon method of breeding, which leads to vines that have lower yields of grapes that are more intense and contain more sugars. The results are wines that have undeniable quality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now, Morena works alongside her son, Massimiliano, to produce 150,000 bottles per year. The company prides itself on the fact that it only uses the grapes that it grows, with no outside help from anybody else. And Trer\u00e9\u2019s wines are now sold all over Europe, China, Japan, and the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That\u2019s amazing growth considering the company started as a 14-acre project. And it\u2019s thanks to wines like the one we\u2019re about to profile that this growth became possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trer\u00e8 Re Famoso 2020<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Made using the Chardonnay and Famoso grapes, the Trer\u00e8 Re Famoso 2020<\/a> is an example of what the company has been able to achieve thanks to its control of more land.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A gorgeous Italian white wine, the straw-yellow colouring is crystal clear from the moment that you pour it, while still hinting at the 5-10-year ageing potential that the wine has.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Should you choose to drink it during these early years of its maturation, the wine will strike you with a gorgeous bouquet that combines traditional citrus notes with interesting herbaceous counter-notes, creating a balance like few others. Lime and grapefruit are the dominant notes that you\u2019ll experience, though further exploration rewards the curious nose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When tasting, you will note that the wine has a remarkable structure and a quiet elegance about it. The clever combination of Chardonnay and Famoso offers hints of the strong acidity of the latter, with the former doing a good job of ensuring that acidity doesn\u2019t overpower the drinker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
