And whether they\u2019re minor or major antibiotics, the doctor slaps you with the same advice:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No alcohol after taking your antibiotics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOkay,\u201d you think to yourself. \u201cNo alcohol for a little while. I can handle that.\u201d And for a couple of days, everything goes fine. You don\u2019t touch a drop of Italian wine with any of your meals and you follow the doctor\u2019s advice to the letter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But one day, you start feeling a little stressed. You want nothing more than to pour yourself a glass of red so that you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.xtrawine.com\/\">can relax with a gorgeous Italian wine<\/a>. The temptation almost becomes too much as you find yourself eyeing the bottle.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOne glass can\u2019t hurt\u2026can it?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As much as it pains us to say it, you will need to avoid any kind of Italian wine while you\u2019re on antibiotics. While one or two glasses likely won\u2019t cause any lasting damage, they will still have a negative <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.xtrawine.com\/en\/the-natural-ways-to-combat-rheumatism-including-italian-wine\/\">effect on your body<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To find out why you have to avoid alcohol when taking antibiotics, let\u2019s dig into what happens to your body if you don\u2019t follow the doctor\u2019s advice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Issue #1 \u2013 The Potential Side-Effects<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The tricky thing with antibiotics and the side-effects that occur when drinking alcohol I that different antibiotics lead to different issues. Furthermore, some antibiotics don\u2019t react with alcohol at all, which complicates matters even further.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even so, we believe you\u2019re taking a risk if you drink with any type of antibiotic in your system. And on a general level, doing so could lead to one, some, or even all of the following side-effects:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Flushing<\/li><li>Nausea<\/li><li>Vomiting<\/li><li>Severe headaches<\/li><li>Stomach cramps<\/li><li>An irregular heartbeat<\/li><li>Lots and lots of sweating<\/li><li>Dizziness<\/li><li>Sleepiness<\/li><li>Light-headedness<\/li><li>Digestive problems<\/li><li>Diarrhoea&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These are all fairly minor side-effect, though each is uncomfortable in its own right and you may experience several of them together if you mix alcohol with antibiotics. You\u2019re essentially giving yourself a short-term touch of the flu by doing it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, there are two ide-effects that are a real worry:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>High blood pressure<\/li><li>Liver damage<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Healthline, these side-effects only occur when you mix alcohol with Isoniazid and Linezolid. Even so, it\u2019s a risk that\u2019s not worth taking, especially as you rely on your live to help you to process alcohol.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Simply put, there\u2019s a host of side-effects that occur when you drink any kind of alcohol after taking antibiotics. You may want to ask your doctor if the specific antibiotic you\u2019re taking reacts poorly with alcohol. However, we recommend avoiding the combination altogether.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Issue #2 \u2013 The Effect on the Antibiotic<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Again, with so many different types of antibiotics out there, we can\u2019t say for certain that alcohol will always reduce the effectiveness of the drug. However, there\u2019s certainly evidence to suggest that it has an effect on two types of antibiotic:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Doxycycline<\/li><li>Erythromycin<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In both cases, the antibiotic becomes less effective when alcohol is introduced into the mix. That means you may not recover from the ailment that the antibiotics are supposed to help cure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But let\u2019s assume that you\u2019re not taking one of these two types. Does that mean you don\u2019t have to worry about alcohol stopping your antibiotics from working?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not necessarily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You have to remember that your liver metabolises both the alcohol and the antibiotic. And it\u2019s possible that drinking alcohol could have a negative effect on what your liver does with the antibiotic. As NYU Langone Health\u2019s Clinical Instructor of Medicine, Dr. Margarita Rohr, explains:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201c\u2026Alcohol is metabolized in the liver, as well as some antibiotics. Depending on how much alcohol is consumed, it may affect the way the liver processes the antibiotic.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sticking with this idea of metabolising, it\u2019s also possible that the antibiotic could speed up the effect that the alcohol has on your body. Lowell General Hospital\u2019s Dr. Laura Hagopian explains:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>&#8220;For instance, erythromycin can increase the amount of alcohol that gets absorbed from your stomach.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Again, the effects vary, or may not even occur, depending on the type of antibiotic you\u2019re taking. However, it\u2019s possible that mixing antibiotics and alcohol could lead to you getting drunk very quickly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And none of us makes good decisions when we\u2019re intoxicated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Issue #3 \u2013 Your Natural Immune Response<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Doctors prescribe antibiotics when your natural immune response isn\u2019t strong enough to take care of an infection on its own. You could think of the drug as being something that offers a boost to your immune system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And that boost doesn\u2019t mean anything if you\u2019re doing something that could reduce the effectiveness of your natural immune response even further.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s some evidence to suggest that drinking alcohol, particularly to excess, lowers your body\u2019s natural immune response. This is especially the case when you\u2019re already ill and your body\u2019s fighting an infection. Even if the alcohol doesn\u2019t mess with the antibiotic, it\u2019s possible that it will mess with your immune system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s a particular worry for anybody who has a low immune response in the first place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Think of your immune response as a small army. When you take antibiotics, you\u2019re sending reinforcements to that army to win a battle that\u2019s going on inside your body. But when you drink alcohol while taking antibiotic, it\u2019s possible that you\u2019re killing some of your internal soldiers before they ever make their way to the battlefield.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Final Word<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The truth of the matter is that there\u2019s no specific way that drinking Italian wine while taking antibiotics will affect your body. The effects vary depending on several factors, such as the type of antibiotic and the volume of alcohol consumed. Some antibiotics even have no reaction to alcohol at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even so, it\u2019s not worth taking the risk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And even of the alcohol doesn\u2019t interact with the antibiotic, it may hamper your body\u2019s ability to use the drug effectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As such, we recommend avoiding alcohol while you\u2019re taking antibiotics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But look on the bright side\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just think about how good that first sip of Italian wine will taste when you\u2019re off the antibiotics!<\/p>\n<\/span>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>You\u2019ve made a visit to the doctor and you\u2019ve received a bad news.
