There are few Italian wines that carry the reputation that Chianti<\/a> <\/em><\/strong>has boasted for so many years. In the pantheon of Italian red wines<\/a>, there\u2019s perhaps only Barolo<\/a> \u2013 The King of Wines<\/em> \u2013 that can match Chianti<\/em> for pure name value. The wine has been a mainstay of the industry for centuries<\/strong> and it\u2019s so important that the industry as a whole went into a period of meltdown when a group of producers decided to mess with the formula during the 1970s<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

To commemorate this wonderful wine, we\u2019ve pulled together a few facts and titbits that we think highlight just how important Chianti<\/em> is to the Italian wine industry.<\/p>\n

Fact #1 \u2013 It Stems From the 13th<\/sup>Century<\/h2>\n

Viticulture, in some form or another, has existed in Italy for thousands of years<\/strong>. In fact, the discovery of ancient traces of wine in a 6,000 year old jug in Sicily<\/a><\/strong> suggests that people have been making wine in the country since before recorded human history.<\/p>\n

Chianti<\/em> is certainly not that old. But the wine does have to roll back the centuries to find its origins. The first recording of wine from the Chianti region<\/a> stem from the 13th<\/sup>century<\/strong>. It is during this period that wines from the \u201cChianti Mountains\u201d<\/em> started to come to prominence. Those wines became so popular that they necessitated the formation of the League of<\/strong> Chianti<\/strong><\/em> in the 14th<\/sup>century.<\/p>\n

Fact #2 \u2013 It Was a White Wine<\/h2>\n

Today, we know Chianti<\/em> as one of the deepest and most complex red wines<\/strong> in all of Italy. But that wasn\u2019t always the case. In fact, Chianti<\/em> may have started out its life as a white wine<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s what the early records seem to indicate. In fact, Chianti<\/em> was a white wine as late as 1398<\/strong><\/a>, which means that switch over the red wine came many years after the Antinori family<\/strong><\/a> started to make the wine. For those who don\u2019t know, the Antinoris are one of Italy\u2019s oldest wine producers<\/strong> and they\u2019re perhaps the one most indelibly linked to Chianti.<\/p>\n

Fact #3 \u2013 It Became a Red Wine Rather Late<\/h2>\n

It appears that the period from the start of the 15th<\/sup>century through to the midpoint of the 18th<\/sup>century represented a period of great change<\/strong> for Chianti<\/em>. It was at some point during these years that the wine underwent a transformation that saw it go from the original white to something that resembles the red wine that we drink today<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

By the end of the 18th<\/sup>century, Chianti<\/em> was definitively a red wine. It\u2019s likely during this period that the general rules that would eventually govern the creation of today\u2019s Chianti Classico<\/a><\/em><\/strong> came into being.<\/p>\n

Fact #4 \u2013 Classico vs. Super Tuscan<\/h2>\n

The world of Chianti<\/em> was rocked in the 1970s. After several centuries of sticking to the same standards, a few Chianti<\/em> producers decided to rock the boat y completely changing the way<\/strong> that they make the wine.<\/p>\n

Dubbed the \u201cSuper Tuscans\u201d<\/em><\/strong>, this wines catered to more international tastes<\/strong> and they causes a great divide in the Chianti loving community. Some lauded them for their individual qualities and great taste. Others lambasted them because their production didn\u2019t follow the rules that were in place for Chianti<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Fact #5 \u2013 Tignanello Was Not the First Super Tuscan<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Antinoris were perhaps the major player during the above-mentioned Super Tuscan era. It was their introduction of Tignanello<\/strong><\/em> <\/a>that really concerned the fans of Chianti Classico<\/a>.<\/p>\n

But Tignanello<\/em> was not the first of the Super Tuscans. It was just the first to company from a massive wine producer<\/strong> that had indelible links to the Chianti region<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Several Super Tuscans came before Tignanello<\/em>. But it was the Antinori\u2019s wine that sparked massive change in the way that we classify Chianti<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Fact #6 \u2013 There Are Multiple Types of Chianti<\/h2>\n

This simple fact highlights how much of an effect the Super Tuscan\u2019s had on the industry.<\/p>\n

For several years, these wines we\u2019re not allowed any sort of DOC classification. Their production methods didn\u2019t match those of traditional Chianti<\/em>, so they couldn\u2019t carry the DOC label<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

But their popularity could not be denied.<\/p>\n

In the end, the DOC had to change its classification system<\/strong> to account for the Super Tuscans. Today, Chianti is broken down into the Chianti<\/a> <\/em>and Chianti Classico<\/a><\/em> regions.<\/p>\n

Incidentally, Tignanello<\/em> still carries the IGT label<\/a>. The power of the wine\u2019s brand is more than enough to sell it without the need for DOC classification<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Fact #7 \u2013 The Little Black Rooster<\/h2>\n

It\u2019s not just the name that separates Chianti Classico<\/em> from the other designations of Chianti<\/em>. Eagle-eyed label viewers will notice that some bottles of Chianti have a small black rooster<\/strong> on the label.<\/p>\n

This rooster tells you that you\u2019re holding either a bottle of Chianti Classico<\/em><\/a> or Chianti Classico Riserva<\/em><\/a><\/strong>. That rooster finds its way onto about 35 million bottles<\/strong> of wine every single year.<\/p>\n

Fact #8 \u2013 Hannibal Lecter\u2019s Favourite Wine Wasn\u2019t Chianti<\/h2>\n

Anybody who has ever seen the Silence of the Lambs<\/em> will remember Anthony Hopkins<\/strong> chilling delivery as he recounts the tale of eating a victim\u2019s liver with some fava beans and a Chianti<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

That single line may have increased the wine\u2019s profile<\/strong> for international viewers. But it\u2019s not the original line.<\/p>\n

In Thomas Harris\u2019 novel, Lecter recounts his grizzly meal by saying that he drank a bottle of Amarone<\/em><\/a>, rather than Chianti<\/em><\/strong>. Apparently, the filmmakers chose Chianti<\/em> for the movie because they believed that the wine had more name recognition<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Either way, we don\u2019t much fancy the idea of ending up on Lector\u2019s dinner plate, regardless of which wine he chooses to complement us.<\/p>\n

So, there you have it. Eight little facts and titbits about one of Italy\u2019s most famous red wines<\/strong>. Chianti<\/em> has achieved a level of fame that means it\u2019s likely to stand the test of the time for many more centuries beyond those that it\u2019s already endured.<\/p>\n
