Every guy had been there. There’s a girl that he really likes and he wants to do everything that he can to impress her. He’s managed to get the phone number and she has even said yes to a date. Now all he needs to do is impress her to the point where he can get the next date.
As much as we would like to say that a first date should be all about showing the other person the real you, in reality it is as much trying to show them a version of you that you think they would like as much as anything else. Everybody does it, trying to appear more cultured or more intelligent than they may believe themselves to be in an effort to get that second date.
If you are thinking of going the cultured route then it really helps to have knowledge of some of the best wine around so that you can make a choice that is sure to impress. It’s not as easy as simply picking the most expensive bottle from the list though. A lot goes into choosing the right bottle of wine so you need to put a little bit of thought into it. Here we give you a few tips on how to go about it.
Not everybody is able to become a sommelier, as they undertake years of training to get the nose and taste for a good bottle of wine. However, they have a level of expertise in the subject that goes far beyond that of the average person, so if you happen to have the opportunity to pick their brains about the best wine around you should take it in a heartbeat.
A sommelier will at least be able to give you a good idea of what makes a good wine. They will be able to tell you how to detect different notes in the wine when you bring it to your nose and the qualities of a good wine when it comes to the taste.
Perhaps most importantly, they will also be able to give you some very useful knowledge in regards to what types of wine go well with different types of food. When you’re having dinner with your date this knowledge will prove to be extremely helpful, as you will be able to use it to choose a wine that best complements her meal, thus showing off your own knowledge of wine in the process.
Learn The History
Let’s say that you have a couple of vintages that you already like and that you are probably going to introduce your date to one of those wines instead of trying something new. That’s all well and good, especially if she likes the taste of the wine that she is experiencing. But now she’s asking you questions about the wine and you have nothing else to say apart from how you really like the taste! You’ve lost an opportunity to really get a good conversation going around the wine that the two of you are enjoying.
If you have a specific plan in regards to the wine that you are going to be drinking on the date then it helps to have a little bit of information about it so you can discuss it in more depth if the subject comes up. Learn about the producer of the wine and their history, the grape behind the wine and maybe even the area in which the wine is produced. All of these things will not only show that you actually know your wines, rather than just enjoying them, in addition to giving you and your date plenty to talk about.
What Does She Like?
Let’s say, for the sake of argument, that this isn’t your first date with this particular lady and you have been lucky enough to have snagged a second, or even third, date with her. At this point you are going to need to show that you have been paying attention to her as well as the wine that you are drinking.
Some women may wish to select their own wine during the first date, which is great for you as it gives you a chance to figure out what they like in a bottle of wine. Sample it with them so that you can get a feel and taste for the wine and jot the name of the bottle down when you get the chance.
This is all in preparation for the later date. You can truly impress your potential future partner if you not only remember the wine that she likes but can also use that information to select other vintages that you think she may enjoy. This shows that you are actually paying attention and care about selecting something that she will like, plus who doesn’t want to find out about a few other wines that they can add to their list of favourites?
Even if your selection of wine for the first date doesn’t get the woman going – we all have individual tastes after all – if you are able to demonstrate passion about the wine you are drinking without making it sound too condescending then you can convincingly show that you have enough knowledge to make a better selection next time.
If she doesn’t like the chosen wine don’t get upset about it. Simply ask her about her preferences, the grapes she likes and everything else that will help you make a better selection next time. Talk about what you love so much about the wine you chose without making it seem like you are lecturing her on why she should like it.
You can then use the information that you receive on a second date to show that you are paying attention. In fact, choosing the wrong wine for the first date could even help you to set up the second by saying that you will get it right next time. It’s the mix of confidence and knowledge that may impress your date.
