One of the real joys of discovering a truly great Italian wine is exploring it further and finding out what kinds of foods go best with it. As wonderful as many a wine tastes when enjoyed on its own, many varieties truly show everything that they have to offer when they are combined with a food that helps to accentuate the qualities that the wine already has and complements them accordingly.
With so many different varieties of food to choose from, it can often be difficult to select a wine that best complements whatever you happen to be eating. That is why we have decided to place a little bit of focus on wines that go well with particular types of food in this article.
Today we will be looking at three different varieties of wines that go spectacularly well with red meats dishes in particular. Perhaps unsurprisingly, each of these great Italian wines is a red, but we have tried to include a couple of vintages that you may not already be aware of that we think are well worth giving a try the next time you sit down to a juicy steak or a tender cut of pork.
Formed way back in 1857 by the brothers Giovan and Gaetano Bertoni, the Bertoni wine company has been making truly exceptional red wines for more than a century and a half from their base in northern Verona.
The brothers brought a well-honed expertise in wine creation to the industry, with Gaetano in particular having already been under the tutelage of the world-renowned wine expert Professor Guyet. They combined this knowledge with a sense of innovation that many felt was missing from an era where traditionalism seemed to be the norm, allowing them to create some truly stunning wines in the process.
Amongst the wines that the family has become most well-known for is their spectacular Bertani Catullo Rosso 2011, which is a beautiful still red that mixed Cabernet Sauvignon with Corvina to create a truly wonderful wine.
With an intense red colouring, the wine is a complex mix of deep fruits and lighter notes that allow it to perfectly complement red meat dishes without ever overpowering them. To the nose it has strong hints of red fruit that meld well with lighter notes, such as cakes and vanilla. Once tasted you will fully appreciate how all of these notes have blended together and will more readily taste the deep red fruits that embody the wine before they give way to the lighter notes that allow it to complement red meat dishes so well.
The Cantina Enrico Serafino was founded in 1878 in Canale d’Alba but it is only in more recent years that it has started to truly gain prominence and develop a reputation amongst wine lovers, despite the fact that their winemaking and agricultural traditions can be dated back to the Middle Ages.
The company was one of the first to sell the local wines of the Piedmont region throughout Italy and the rest of the world, allowing them to slowly but surely enhance the reputation of the area and, in turn, gain their own levels of international renown in the process.
The company also goes to great pains to introduce innovation that best complements their use of traditional methods, with the entire winery undergoing a period of modernisation during the 1990s that has seen them introduce a wide range of techniques and practices to their wine creation that has only enhanced their reputation.
In terms of the wines that they produce, the one that is probably best enjoyed with a good red meat dish is their Enrico Serafino Barbera d’Alba 2012, which is a gorgeous still red that ages beautifully. To the nose it has an intense flavour with delicate undertones, which are complemented by a very full body when it comes time to taste. This complexity gives way to a softening over time that makes the wine perfect for enjoying with red meats as the rich flavours of the wine temper the taste of the meat without every overpowering it.
Unlike the other winemakers on this list, Villa Venti pride themselves in creating truly organic wines that make no use of man-made chemicals or fertilisers and instead aim to bring the many ancient properties of their land to the masses through the wonderful still red wines that they produce.
Located in the heart of the Venetian region, the winemaker brings with it an adherence to the ancient traditions of this fine winemaking land, melding them with new production techniques to keep as much of the older taste of their wines as possible.
Despite this, the company is perhaps the newest on this list, having first been established in 2002 and only having created two wines in that short period of time. However, their quality cannot be overlooked and they have quickly gained a reputation for creating great wines in such a short period of time.
Nowhere is this more ably demonstrated than with their Villa Venti Sangiovese Superiore Primo Segno 2011, which mixes four different types of Sangiovese grapes to create a critically acclaimed wine that goes down extremely well with any red meat dish.
With such a mix of fruity flavours it can be easy to think that the wine might become too complex, but they actually complement each other perfectly and mix extremely well with most dishes.
So there you have it! Three truly great Italian red wines that you simply have to try the next time that you sit down to enjoy a good meat dish.
Each of them brings their own qualities to the table, but they all do an excellent job of complementing richer red meats and are most certainly recommended, not just by us but also a number of other critics throughout the country.
